Yakima Valley Wine History
In eastern Washington, large-scale irrigation began in 1903, powered by runoff from the melting snowcaps of the Cascade Mountains. That development opened up the rich volcanic soils and sunny, arid climate. Italian and German varietals were planted in the Yakima and Columbia Valleys, and wine grape acreage grew rapidly during the early part of the 20th century.
