Yakima Valley Wine History
Large-scale irrigation began in eastern Washington in 1903, powered by runoff from the melting snowcaps of the Cascade Mountains. That development opened the way for the rich volcanic soils and sunny, arid climate to reach their dormant potential. Italian and German varietals were planted in the Yakima and Columbia Valleys, and wine grape acreage grew quickly during the early part of the 20th century.
