Yakima Valley Wine History

In eastern Washington, large-scale irrigation began in 1903, supplied by runoff from the melting snowcaps of the Cascade Mountains. That development opened up the rich volcanic soils and sunny, arid climate’s previously untapped potential. Italian and German varietals were planted in the Yakima and Columbia Valleys, and wine grape acreage grew quickly during the early 20th century.
