On Thursday February 18, 2027 at 5pm, White Pass Ski Area will host the 2027 Ninety-Pound Rucksack Challenge. This year’s event also recognizes the 2026 Ninety-Pound Rucksack Challenge: 82nd anniversary of the Riva Ridge Climb! Participants are invited to bring their skins/snowshoes and rucksacks, gather with friends, and celebrate the tradition and roots of American skiing.

The annual ski mountaineering challenge honors the 10th Mountain Division, its historic World War II climb of Italy’s Riva Ridge, and the division’s contributions to American skiing after the war.

Taking part

• Complete the challenge registration. Entry is FREE!
• Bring a touring set up with skins or snowshoes, a headlamp, and snow gear.
• For the weighted challenge, bring water bottles full of water; they can be emptied at the top before the descent.
• Invite friends to join the mountain climb. Every participant must complete the registration process.
• Snowshoes are available for rent and can be purchased during registration.

NOTE: Night skiing will also be available from 2 pm until 8 pm.
