Renewable Energy Center

Kittitas County’s wind and sunshine offer an exceptional natural resource for generating clean, renewable energy. Positioned on a high ridge, the Renewable Energy Center gives visitors a close view of the facility’s 148 wind turbines, along with 360 degree vistas of Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, Mount Hood and the Columbia River Basin.

Visitors can take a guided tour or view the educational exhibits to discover more about wind and solar technology and the distinctive natural history of the area. Outdoor paths provide access to a solar array, blade, turbine generator, gearbox and other displays.

The visitor center, also called the Renewable Energy Center, welcomes visitors April to October 31, from 9 am to 5 pm. Self-guided packets for the outdoor exhibits can be requested via email or picked up from the box beside the front door from April through November. The Wild Horse Wind Facility does not allow public access from December through March. Recreational access with an Access Permit will resume April 1.

Free Guided Tours

Weather permitting, complimentary guided tours leave the Renewable Energy Center each day from April through October 31 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Reservations are not required. Separate group tours of Wild Horse can be arranged by calling 509-964-7815.

The 60 minute walking tour visits the solar array, wind turbine blade, turbine generator and gearbox, and includes an opportunity to see inside the base of an active wind turbine.
