Capitol Edge — King Lear by Actors From the London Stage at The 4th Street Theatre

Event Overview

Actors From the London Stage presents Shakespeare’s King Lear at The 4th Street Theatre in Downtown Yakima on March 11 and 12, 2027, at 7:30 pm.

The play examines a monarch’s struggle between authority and chaos, while exploring selfless love, betrayal, and the collapse of civilization under unchecked selfish greed. Shakespeare’s treatment of madness, politics, and filial love remains deeply resonant and important.

Actors From The London Stage

Actors From The London Stage (AFTLS) began in 1975 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Professor Homer “Murph” Swander and renowned stage and screen actor Sir Patrick Stewart founded the company. Sir Patrick Stewart is best known for playing Captain Picard on TV’s “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and Professor Xavier in the “X-Men” film franchise.

The company’s ethos and mission are built around simplicity. Five actors perform a complete Shakespeare play using minimal props and costumes, directing themselves while taking on multiple roles.

The performance forms only one part of the company’s work. AFTLS visits colleges and universities throughout the United States twice yearly, with Shakespeare at Notre Dame organizing and administering each tour. During every residency week, the five-member company also conducts classes and workshops.

The company’s purpose is to approach Shakespeare’s text as a performance blueprint, bringing the words from the page into live performance as Shakespeare originally intended.

Performance Schedule

The 4th Street Theatre will host the performances at 7:30 pm on March 11 and 12.
