Fly Fishing 101

Held on Saturdays at Red's Fly Shop beside the Yakima River, Fly Fishing 101 introduces the fundamentals in a land-based setting. Students can arrive without equipment because rods and reels are provided. Espresso and breakfast are available at check-in, and the day includes a break between sections for lunch and a drink before the afternoon’s more advanced instruction.

Fly Fishing 201

The Sunday Fly Fishing 201 session builds on foundational skills. Instruction covers mending for improved line control, creating a drag-free drift, and performing a roll cast. Students also practice intermediate casting techniques such as shooting line for added distance and kackhanded casting for challenging angles. Advanced knots, including the Triple Surgeon’s knot and important line-splicing connections, are part of the course as well. The goal is to help anglers improve presentation and manage their setup more effectively.

Fly Fishing 301

Fly Fishing 301 is intended for anglers who already understand the basics and want greater control, precision, and success on the water. The program opens with one hour at Red's Fly Shop focused on advanced techniques and rigging strategies. Students then spend 2.5 hours wade fishing on the Yakima River, putting those skills into practice with expert coaching.

Women's Programs

Red’s Fly Shop welcomes women across its guided adventures and general classes, from beginners through anglers developing more advanced abilities. Women who would rather fish and learn with other women can choose from women-specific programs centered on confidence-building, community, and enjoying fly fishing in a supportive, inclusive setting.
