Sharkathon is among the largest conservation-based shark fishing tournaments. Its purpose is to teach fishermen why catch-and-release matters for sharks and why protecting sea life is essential.

Event Details

Sharkathon
Padre Island National Seashore and Gulf Beaches
October 9-11, 2026

Sharkathon is one of Texas' most popular surf fishing competitions, held each year on the beaches of Corpus Christi. The tournament covers Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) and all Corpus Christi beaches, with the exception of the area from Mustang Island State Park to the Port Aransas South Jetty.

This catch-and-release event welcomes anglers at every skill level and features shark, redfish, and kingfish categories. Conservation and care for the marine environment remain central to the tournament, which gathers a dedicated fishing community for a weekend of adventure, friendship, and impressive catches. It is a one of a kind fishing tradition.

Why was Sharkathon created?

Sharkathon advances conservation through catch-and-release fishing, with particular attention to protecting declining shark populations. Responsible angling practices help participants understand the importance of safeguarding marine species, especially sharks, for future generations.

The tournament gives anglers an opportunity to learn how to catch, photograph, and release sharks while increasing awareness of conservation work. It also raises funds for educational programs and environmental initiatives, encouraging deeper appreciation for marine life and its preservation.

Where is Sharkathon located?

Check-in and the awards ceremony take place at Briscoe King Pavilion at Padre Balli Park.

Fishing happens on Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) and across all Corpus Christi beaches, except for the stretch from Mustang Island State Park to the Port Aransas South Jetty. Additional information is provided in the Tournament Rules.

How do you enter the tournament?

Registration is completed on the Sharkathon website. After signing in through an authorized user account, entrants can open the “store” tab to buy an entry and pay the required fee. Participants should verify that their email address is accurate to prevent login problems or deletion of their registration.

What are the rules for the tournament?

At Sharkathon, understanding the rules is the most important rule. Every participant should carefully review the event’s requirements and regulations. Not knowing the guidelines can result in disqualification, so all anglers should become familiar with them before taking part.

Under Chapter 66, Section 66.023 of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Code, attempting to cheat in a tournament of this size is a third-degree felony. Violators will be reported to the proper authorities.

Division-specific requirements are available in the Sharkathon Rules.

What is shark tagging?

Scientists use shark tagging to research sharks and follow them in their natural habitats. The process places a small, non-invasive tag on a shark’s fin so researchers can study movement, behavior, and migration. Information from these tags contributes useful knowledge about shark populations, supports conservation, and helps inform policies designed to protect these important marine species.

Are there many winners?

Sharkathon recognizes winners in several divisions, including shark, redfish, and kingfish. Competitors can receive substantial cash prizes, gear, and other rewards. The broader victory, however, is conservation: as a catch-and-release tournament, Sharkathon encourages responsible fishing and helps protect marine life for future generations.
