Are campfires allowed?

General gulf beach campfire rules

Padre Island National Seashore

Small campfires may be made on beaches where camping is permitted. Keep fires away from the dunes, and do not burn wood containing nails. Put out fires with water rather than covering them with sand.

Mustang Island State Park

The electric campsites sit roughly 400 yards from the water, beyond the sand dunes. Because these sites do not include fire rings, campfires are forbidden at the campsites and may only be built on the beach. Small campfires are permitted at primitive campsites.

How long can I camp in one area?

Padre Island National Seashore

Camping in the park is limited to a maximum of 14 consecutive nights. After reaching 14 nights, whether those nights are consecutive or intermittent, campers must remove themselves and all property from the park for at least 14 nights before returning for another overnight stay.

A camper may not spend more than 28 calendar nights per year in the park, regardless of whether the nights are consecutive.

Mustang Island State Park

The stay limit is 14 days.

Gulf Beaches

Camping is permitted for 3 days & nights consecutively, with a maximum of 6 days within a month.

Are there any camping fees?

Mustang Island State Park

Goose Island State Park

Padre Island National Seashore

An entrance pass is required to enter Padre Island National Seashore. The one-day pass remains valid until 11:59pm on the date of purchase, but it cannot be used for overnight camping.

A 7-day pass, valid for 7 days from date of purchase, and an annual pass, valid for one year from the month of purchase, both allow overnight camping.

Reservations are not available. Campsites are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Campers must also have a beach permit, which can be obtained at multiple locations.

Are there facilities nearby for supplies?

Grocery stores, gas stations, and convenience stores are only a short drive from most campsites. Larger camping areas, including Padre Island National Seashore, may be more remote: the closest amenities are about 13 miles away. The park does not sell food, firewood, or fishing licenses onsite, so plan your supplies before arriving.

The Malaquite Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. It sells bags of ice, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, and other toiletries. Cellular service is very limited in the park, so arrange a check-in and check-out plan with a family member or friend before your visit.

Are campsites pet-friendly?

Most campgrounds accept pets, provided they remain leashed and supervised at all times. Leashes should not exceed 6 ft.

Pets are not permitted inside buildings at Texas State Parks. Clean up after pets and keep them away from protected dunes, nesting areas, and wildlife.

Will there be wildlife in the area?

Coastal wildlife may include coyotes, sea turtles, and many types of birds. Take special care around nesting areas, particularly from April to July, when endangered sea turtles may be present.

Jellyfish and stingrays can also be a concern while wading. Do not feed wildlife; this protects both visitors and the animals.
