Fireworks Safety Tips
For anyone using fireworks outside city limits, follow these precautions:
- Do not use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
- Keep young children from handling fireworks.
- Permit older children to use fireworks only with adult supervision.
- Never ignite fireworks indoors.
- Use fireworks only at a safe distance from people, houses, and flammable material.
- Light only one device at a time, then move back to a safe distance.
- Do not set off devices inside a container.
- Never re-light or handle fireworks that malfunction.
- Before discarding unused fireworks, soak them in water for a few hours.
- Keep a bucket of water nearby to extinguish fireworks that fail to go off completely or to put out a fire.
Report illegal fireworks discharge by calling the non-emergency line at 361-886-2600. Fireworks complaints should not be reported through 911.
Fireworks are illegal within Corpus Christi city limits, including all city beaches.
Beach Safety
Enjoying the sun and surf safely starts with preparation. Lifeguards patrol every day of the week during summer, but beach conditions should still be checked before heading out. These Gulf Coast water-safety practices can help protect you and your group.
Check Conditions
Before entering the water, review the local beach forecast and speak with a lifeguard. Check noaa.gov or the live beach cameras for current information about tides, currents, and weather. A lifeguard on duty can also provide safety recommendations.
Lifeguards
Whenever possible, swim where a lifeguard is present. The Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department’s full lifeguard schedule provides information about locations with lifeguard coverage and mobile patrols throughout the year. Call 911 in an emergency.
Know the Flags
Beach flags communicate essential information about water conditions, surf dangers, and marine hazards. Check the flags posted at beach entrances and near lifeguard stations before going into the water. Knowing the current surf conditions and understanding these warnings can help prevent accidents at our gulf beaches.
Daily updates are posted as stories on Facebook through the “Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation” page.
Don't Assume
Dangerous rip currents may develop even when the weather is sunny. These strong currents can carry swimmers away from shore and may be deadly without the right response. The Je'Sani Smith Foundation provides information on recognizing and escaping rip currents.
Prepare Your Group
Before visiting Corpus Christi beaches, talk with everyone in your group about safety plans, water-safety guidance, and other important needs. Teach children about ocean safety with the beach safety coloring bookPDF File, available through the Visitor Info Center.
Dogs
Dogs are off-limits to dogs on all major holidays. During those periods, take your pups to Padre Balli Park instead.
