Visit Wright Brothers National Memorial
Discover the Wright Brothers Museum on The Outer Banks, including its refreshed visitor center and the landscape where powered flight first took place.
Air travel has reshaped human history in extraordinary ways. More than a century ago, Orville and Wilbur Wright arrived at Big Kill Devil Hill to pursue one of humanity’s oldest ambitions: flight. Wright Brothers National Memorial, one of the OBX’s three National Parks, honors the experimentation, invention, and discovery that unfolded near Kitty Hawk, NC in 1903. Though the founders of modern aviation did not come from the Outer Banks, they became part of the place’s story in the same welcoming spirit that brings visitors here today.
The newly remodeled visitor center features interactive exhibits and activities focused on aviation, historic preservation, and STEAM-based activities (science, technology, engineering, arts and math), with support from local and regional partners. Inside, guests follow the lives of Orville and Wilbur Wright, learning about their personalities, the challenges they worked through, and the problem-solving process that led to their first flight on December 17, 1903. In the Flight Room, the reproduction 1903 Wright Flyer is once again on display, joined by a brand new 16-screen video wall.
Standard hours are Sunday-Saturday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with closures on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Christmas Day.
