Fishing Trips, Charters, Tours & Boat Rentals
Fishing remains a longtime favorite activity for both Catalina Island visitors and residents. You can pursue the big catch by renting a boat and setting out independently, joining a fishing charter, or casting from Avalon’s Green Pleasure Pier.
Around the island, abundant schools of mackerel, sardines and smelt draw larger sport fish, including Yellowtail and White Sea Bass. If you fish from the pier, avoid the Garibaldi—the vivid orange fish often seen in the harbor—which has protected status and is California's State Marine Fish. Information is also available about Catalina Island kelp forest fish and creatures.
Catalina Island has several Marine Protected Areas which prohibit fishing, including the Casino Point Dive Park area and Lover's Cove, but there are still many other spots to choose from.
Fishing License
A California fishing license is required for anyone 16 years and older unless you are fishing off a pier. Pier fishing does not require a license for any age. A fishing license can be obtained online through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife or in person in Avalon at the Catalina Coastal Tours / Jet Ski Rentals office located at 205 Crescent Ave or at Joe's Tackle Box adjacent to Joe's Rent-A-Boat located on the Green Pleasure Pier.
In the summer season, the City of Avalon runs a Kids Fishing Derby on Wednesday mornings from 7-9 am. Prizes are given. The event is open to all children age 3-16. Participants do need to provide their own equipment.
For additional details, use the California Marine Protected Areas Mobile App or the Ocean Sport Fishing & MPA interactive map on your smart phone.
