A Memorable Ride on the McKenzie Pass Scenic Bikeway

The McKenzie Pass Scenic Bikeway follows Highway 242 across the Cascade Mountains. The route begins in Sisters, Oregon and ends in Rainbow, a community on the McKenzie River. This breathtaking 38 mile (61 km) ride is demanding, yet deeply rewarding.

The roadway follows an 1860s wagon route through scenic switchbacks and is listed on the U.S. Register of Historic Places. Depending on weather and road work, Highway 242 is closed to all traffic from mid-November through mid-June. Check road status before making riding plans.

Dee Wright Observatory

Near the summit, the Dee Wright Observatory offers one of the ride’s most remarkable views. From there, look across a stark lava-rock landscape toward majestic snow capped peaks. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s, the observatory is itself an intriguing lava-rock structure.

An interpretive trail and information panels explain the distinctive ecosystem and point out the distant, glistening mountains. The site also provides access to a trailhead for the Pacific Crest Trail.

The descent from McKenzie Pass

After taking in the lookout, descend through old growth forests along narrow, winding roads. Some sections have minimal shoulder, so use caution while going downhill. Lakeside camping and several short hikes provide opportunities to pause along the way. A one mile (1.6 km) walk leads to Proxy Falls and its two distinct waterfalls.

Finish along the McKenzie River

Consider ending the trip at Belknap Hot Springs Resort or another lodge along the McKenzie River. At Belknap Hot Springs, cyclists can celebrate with a soak at the camping and RV resort, which has two hot spring-fed swimming pools. Set beside the beautiful McKenzie River, this distinctive retreat makes an ideal place to mark a cycling accomplishment.
