Winter Fat Tire Biking in St. Louis Park and Golden Valley
Winter Adventures
Fat Tire Biking
Snow and low temperatures do not have to end the riding season. A fat tire bike makes it possible to enjoy miles of cycling throughout winter.
Brookview
Brookview offers a one-mile, multi-use natural snow recreational trail that winds across the golf course during winter. Gentle hills and solar LED lights make it a welcoming place to ride. The trail opens once snow conditions are appropriate and remains maintained through late February.
Theodore Wirth Regional Park
At North Wirth, The Loppet Foundation grooms and maintains three singletrack trails for fat-tire biking and snowshoeing:
- Area 36 (2.5 miles, easy)
- 45 North (1.5 miles, intermediate)
- Conundrum (1.25 miles, advanced)
Minnesota Off Road Cyclists (MORC) manages additional fat biking routes:
- North Loop (Back 40) (3.5 miles)
- South Loop (.66 miles)
- Glenwood Spur (1 mile)
- Southwest Loop (1.9 miles, intermediate)
- Brownie Lake Loop (1.5 miles, intermediate to extreme)
Cyclists may use paved and plowed bike paths as well as designated mountain bike trails. Riding is not permitted in the Eloise Butler section of trails (Southeast Wirth) or on groomed ski trails.
Bike Rentals
Those without a fat tire bike can rent one from The Trailhead at Theodore Wirth Regional Park in Golden Valley. Every rental comes with a helmet (required) and a U Lock (if desired), while helmets are also available on their own. Tonka Cycle & Ski, located in nearby Hopkins, offers fat tire bikes and other bicycles for day rentals.
