A Walkable St. Louis Park Neighborhood: Excelsior & Grand

Excelsior & Grand

Excelsior & Grand was created as a walkable neighborhood and has a walkability score of 86! from Walk Score. The revitalized 4-block district follows Excelsior Blvd and Grand Way in the southeast corner of St. Louis Park. Upscale apartments, family homes, inviting green spaces, approachable shopping, personal care services and dining with local flare all come together here.

A Soaring Sculpture

At the center of Excelsior & Grand, a bubbling fountain sits beside Andrea Myklebust’s sculpture Allegory of Excelsior. In Latin, “excelsior” translates to “higher” or “to the sky.” Rising 43 feet, the structure depicts a nude bronze figure covered in 22-karat gold leaf, arranged to create the impression of a figure soaring through the stars.

A Picturesque Setting

Wolfe Park defines the neighborhood’s northern edge, with Wolfe Lake and Veterans’ Memorial Amphitheater among its highlights. When snow arrives, visitors can bring a sled for a run down the hillside. A walk through the park leads to the SLP Rec Center, which includes two indoor skating rinks, as well as the ROC, a covered outdoor skating rink.

During summer, children can explore the playground, fish in the lake or cool off at the 20,000 sq. ft. Aquatic Park. Families can also gather for live music and open mic performances at the terraced, open-air amphitheater with a blanket and picnic dinner.
