Fishing in St. Louis Park and Golden Valley

Explore popular fishing places across St. Louis Park and Golden Valley, where many different fish species can be found.

A Rewarding Catch

Minnesota’s Sweet Spot is dotted with lakes, ponds and creeks that draw anglers. The area participates in Fishing in the Neighborhood (FiN), a program of Minnesota’s Dept. of Natural Resources that promotes awareness and expands urban opportunities for shore fishing. These ponds work especially well for new anglers or anyone looking for a relaxed place to cast. Bring a rod, reel and tackle box, then settle in for the possibility of a memorable catch.

Lamplighter Pond (FiN)

At the center of the 8.2-acre Lamplighter Park sits Lampligher Pond in northwest St. Louis Park. Restoration of the pond’s native shoreline vegetation has produced a healthier setting for fish and wildlife. The pond reaches 6 feet deep and offers abundant bluegill, black crappie and common carp.

There may be more than fish beneath the surface. Local legend says Lamplighter Park is haunted by the caretaker of the former Silver Fox Farm, which closed in the area in the ‘40s. After dark, an unsettling light reportedly reflects across the pond while the caretaker makes his rounds to check on his foxes. The ghost may or may not appear, but you’re guaranteed to scare up some fish!

Sweeney Lake

In a quiet residential part of Golden Valley is Sweeny Lake, covering 68 acres. Its average depth is 12 ft (max depth = 25 ft). A small parking lot, dock and carry-in boat access are located at the lake’s north end.

The lake supports a broad mix of species: black bullhead, bluegill, brown bullhead, green sunfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, white crappie, yellow bullhead, yellow perch, and pumpkinseed fish. Sweeny Lake is also suitable for ice fishing.

Westwood Lake

Westwood Lake lies within Westwood Hills Nature Center and spans 64 acres. The lake is stocked with bluegills. Follow the paved and natural trails to reach the fishing pier, with opportunities to observe wildlife on the way.

Fishing poles can be rented at the Interpretive Center, where visitors will also find live animals and exhibits. The site includes a playground, restrooms, and ample parking.

Wirth Lake (FiN)

Within Golden Valley’s Theodore Wirth Regional Park, Wirth Lake covers 40 acres and reaches 25-feet deep. Its waters contain a large supply of bluegill, black crappie, bullhead, largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and yellow perch.

A pier stands on the lake’s east side, with additional shoreline fishing locations immediately north of it. Visitors can also enjoy a swimming and picnicking beach, along with ample parking.

Wolfe Lake

Wolfe Lake is near Excelsior & Grand in St. Louis Park and forms part of the larger Wolfe Park. The 3.3-acre lake reaches depths of 25 feet and provides a fishing pier plus four shore fishing stations.

Fish found here include bluegill, black crappie, largemouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. Wolfe Park also offers a sheltered picnic area, pavilions, walking paths, a playground, restrooms, and excellent parking.
