Great food is becoming one of the defining attractions of St. Louis Park and Golden Valley. Whether you’re searching for a restaurant with a menu made for dogs or a spot known for adventurous wursts, these are the must-visit dining destinations.
American
American cuisine can be anything but ordinary. The restaurants below bring imaginative touches and delicious upgrades to familiar favorites.
For dog owners, The Block Food + Drink in St. Louis Park is a can’t-miss destination—and your dog is welcome to join you. Its heated, dog-friendly paw-tio welcomes all doggos, while a separate canine menu includes Nala’s turkey muttloaf, the NE pup burger and homemade pupcream. Treat your pooch to something special while enjoying the broasted chicken yourself, including the hot chic crispy preparation for extra zest. The restaurant also serves vegan choices, such as a Philly sandwich made with The Herbivorous Butcher’s porterhouse. Adults can choose from block-tails and boozy shakes prepared with homemade custard.
Mill Valley Kitchen in St. Louis Park focuses on healthful cooking with local, sustainably sourced ingredients. Its menu emphasizes fine meats and seafood, with dishes influenced by the California coast. Every plate is created to support a healthy lifestyle, and vegan and gluten-free diners will find a range of suitable choices. A recommended combination is the miso-glazed sea bass followed by maple panna cotta.
Meat lovers will find plenty to enjoy at Doolittles Woodfire Grill in Golden Valley. The restaurant uses woodfired rotisserie cooking, grilling abundant cuts of meat over an open flame to create a savory, wood-roasted flavor. First-time guests can try the woodfired smokehouse spareribs or woodfired spit-roasted chicken. For a more traditional option, the smoked bacon jam burger is a reliable choice.
Golden Valley’s New Bohemia Wurst and Bier House describes itself as the New American Craft Bier Hall. Its beer program includes 36 rotating beers on tap, with 23 of those being local Minnesota beers. The restaurant also prepares 24 varieties of sausages, all locally made from all-natural, whole cuts of meat with no artificial flavoring and zero nitrates.
These are far from ordinary sausages. Options include the Juicy Lucy brat filled with provolone and pepperoncini and a mac and cheese stuffed brat. Soft pretzel fans should order the giant Bavarian pretzel, handmade in the traditional German style and served with pepper jack cheese sauce. The adventurous wursts section includes the lamb gyro brat with cucumber sauce, the smoked elk brat, the wild boar brat and the Louisiana alligator bayou brat.
Mexican
México City Café in St. Louis Park offers an especially authentic Mexican dining experience. Owner and head chef Julio Margalli grew up in Mexico City, learning traditional cooking from his mom and grandmother. His approach centers on careful preparation and the freshest ingredients. There are no freezers or microwaves in the restaurant, and each order is made to order. The menu combines familiar dishes such as burritos and enchiladas with Mexico City street tacos given a modern twist.
For Mexican food accompanied by a margarita, straight tequila or mezcal—and a healthy dose of nostalgia—visit Chi-Chi’s in St. Louis Park. Its menu includes traditional Mexican favorites such as chimichangas, fajitas, enchiladas, burros and tacos. Chi-Chi’s also has an extraordinary tequila and mezcal collection, including 100 types of tequila. Guests can order a classic margarita or choose from 12 flavors, including blueberry, papaya, prickly pear and smoked jalapeño.
Bodega Taco Bar is a convenient choice when you’re dining on the go. This taco shop serves traditional Mexican food with its own loving twist. Takeout selections include street-style or American tacos, burritos, tortas, quesadillas and the restaurant’s famous birria tacos, accompanied by a cup of beef consommé.
Asian Fusion
Lat14 Asian Eatery in Golden Valley grew out of Ann Ahmed’s personal experiences. The owner and executive chef was born in Laos and spent part of her childhood in a Thai refugee camp before her family relocated to Minnesota when she was 4. She spent much of her youth cooking with her mother, learning how food can bring people together.
That idea shaped Lat14’s menu, which draws from the Asian cultures along the 14th parallel north: Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines. Standout dishes include Thai basil wings, snow crab wontons, smoked salmon fried rice and tamarind glazed walleye.
Nong’s Thai Cuisine in Golden Valley also has deep family roots. Chef Nong, the restaurant’s namesake, was born and raised in Thailand and began cooking at 12, guided by her grandmother and mother. As the eldest of five children, she went daily to the corner market near her family’s home in Bangkok to purchase fresh ingredients and prepare meals for her siblings, helping ensure they were well-fed and ready to succeed in school.
Today, Chef Nong continues to prepare recipes passed down through generations, giving everyone in Minnesota’s Sweet Spot the opportunity to enjoy the food once made for her family. The Pad Thai and drunken noodles are especially popular choices, and either can be prepared with tofu, mock duck, chicken, beef, pork, shrimp or calamari.
Indian
Best of India in St. Louis Park is a hidden gem with a loyal following. Since opening in 2005, Chef Autul Mondal has served classic favorites alongside original creations made with fresh ingredients, herbs and spices. Each dish is prepared individually, with seasoning tailored to bring out its particular aroma and flavor.
A traditional oven supports the restaurant’s selection of tandoori specialties. The menu also includes chicken, lamb and seafood dishes, along with numerous vegetarian and vegan selections. With so many appealing options, choosing a meal may be the hardest part.
Dancing Ganesha is a newer addition to the local restaurant scene, offering contemporary Indian cuisine. Entrées include tandoori specialties, rice biryani, tikka masala, vindaloo, korma and more. Diners can select chicken, beef, lamb, shrimp, fish or vegetarian preparations, then add naan and desserts such as rasmalai and kheer-rice pudding.
Pizza
When a pizza craving arrives, Red’s Savoy Pizza in St. Louis Park belongs near the top of the list. Red’s has served ‘Sota-style pizza for more than half a century. This local style combines a thin crust, passive-aggressive sauce—the Minnesota Nice version with a kick—real cheese and a generous layer of toppings, all cut into square slices. The square cut is an essential part of the experience.
Parkway Pizza offers another take on local pizza and is billed as Best. Pizza. Ever. Its handcrafted Minneapolis-style pizzas feature thin crust and square-cut pieces. The menu also includes pastas, hoagies and salads, with numerous vegan options and craft beer on tap. Parkway Pizza was voted Best Pizza and Best Italian in the 2023 Sun Sailor’s Reader’s Choice Awards. Guests can dine in or take their food to go.
The Park Tavern is a longtime local hangout and popular sports bar, with more than 60 years as a neighborhood favorite. Guests can build their own pizza or choose specialty pies such as the Grilled Athena, topped with grilled artichokes, sausage and feta, or the Pickle Pizza, made with white sauce, dill pickles, dill and red onions. Vegan options are available. The venue also features 20 lanes of bowling and arcade games for kids and the young at heart.
Dessert
Hazelwood Food + Drink’s chocolate cake follows Grandma Betty’s recipe. Made with callebault chocolate, it is finished with cocoa cream frosting, hot fudge sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Hazelwood also serves banana cream pie, key lime pie and bread pudding.
Yum! Kitchen & Bakery has its own chocolate cake choices. The Patticake comes with white buttercream frosting, while the Baker’s Man uses chocolate swiss buttercream. The bakery also offers coconut cake, cupcakes, mini pies, bars and cookies.
